Upstep Review: Turnaround, Refunds and Price

An Upstep review by a competitor, built only from Upstep's own pages: stated turnaround, the refund fine print behind the guarantee, and how EvenStep differs.

The short version

  • This review is written by a competitor and uses only what Upstep publishes on its own website, quoted with the page and the date we read it. We do not summarize third-party review sites here.
  • Upstep states three different turnaround windows across its pages, and the marketing guarantee reads differently from the terms, which deduct a share of the price at every stage of a refund.
  • The catalog, the app-based scan and the sale-driven pricing are real strengths; the wait and the fine print are the two things to weigh before ordering.
  • EvenStep exists because of those two things: one turnaround figure, stated in writing, from our own workshop, and a refund without deductions. Our numbers are the same on every page, and our own terms page is linked on every product.

How to read this review

EvenStep is a competitor. We make custom orthotics from an at-home impression in our own workshop, and we started the company partly because of what we read on Upstep’s site. That makes us an interested party, so this page follows one rule: every statement about Upstep is a quotation from an Upstep page, with the URL and the date we read it, and we keep an archived copy of each page. We do not quote review platforms, forums or complaint databases here, because those are somebody else’s evidence to present.

What Upstep sells

Upstep sells custom orthotic insoles by mail, organized as a large catalog of designs by condition, sport and daily use, and it has done so for years at a scale that shows in its review counts [17]. The current process starts with a phone scan through its app [4], although an at-home impression kit is still described on the product page we archived [5]. The orthotics are described as designed and made by an in-house team of licensed podiatrists [13], the purchase is described as eligible for FSA and HSA funds, and the company says it cannot file insurance claims for customers [14]. Those are the strengths, and they are real.

Turnaround: three numbers on the same site

The wait is the first thing to weigh. Upstep’s How it Works page states that orthotics are created and shipped within 16-22 business days of the scan [1]. The FAQ further down the same page states 10-16 business days after the scan [2]. The terms and conditions state 12-18 business days from receipt of an impression box [3]. All three windows describe production only, before the carrier’s transit time, and they differ by a week or more depending on which paragraph you happen to read.

We will let you draw your own conclusion about a company that publishes three turnaround figures. Ours is a single figure — under 10 business days from the day your impression arrives, or a full refund — and it appears on the product page, the checkout page and the delivery guarantee page from the same numbers as every page on this site, so it cannot drift.

The guarantee: marketing versus terms

The product page promises, in the plainest possible words, that if you are not in love with the orthotics within 180 days Upstep will refund your money [15]. The terms page describes a different arrangement. Refunds on the custom orthotic are subject to stage-based deductions: 10% before the impression kit is returned, 15% after the kit is received but before the orthotics ship, and 30% after delivery, following a 21-day adjustment period and within 180 days [6]. Original, expedited and rush shipping fees are not refunded [7], refunds are processed 14 to 18 business days after the returned product is received [8], and customers are entitled to one complimentary remake after the adjustment period [9]. The shell carries an 8-year breakage warranty [16]. The terms do not say who pays the return shipping on a pair of orthotics sent back for a refund; ours is free and we send the label.

None of that is hidden; it is on the terms page for anyone who reads it. Our point is narrower: the phrase on the product page and the table in the terms describe two different guarantees, and the table is the one that governs your refund. EvenStep’s guarantee reads, in full: 180-day 100% money-back guarantee — no deductions, free return shipping. The same sentence appears on our policies page, our product pages and this page.

Price and the way it is presented

The product page we archived shows a list price of $458 struck through to a sale price of $239 [10], with the second pair at $149 and any additional pair at $114 [11], under a sitewide banner advertising a percentage discount beside a ticking timer [12]. Multi-pair pricing is a sensible idea, since orthotics do not move well between shoe types, and Upstep’s ladder is aggressive.

We price differently on purpose. The first pair is $189 and each additional pair is $139, every day, with no list price to strike through and no clock. Whether a permanent sale or a flat price is the better deal depends on the day you order, so compare the number you would actually pay rather than the percentage in the banner.

Where Upstep is strong

A large catalog of designs, an app that removes the impression kit from the process for people who prefer that, years of operating history, FSA and HSA eligibility, a complimentary remake, and a long shell warranty. If those are your priorities and the wait suits you, Upstep is a legitimate choice, and this page is not going to tell you otherwise.

Where EvenStep differs

Two things, and they are the two things this review kept returning to. First, one turnaround figure, stated in writing and measured from receipt of your impression, from our own workshop. Second, a refund without deductions and without a shipping-fee carve-out. We also state plainly that we are physician-founded and that our medical director reviews our designs; we do not claim clinical superiority over anyone’s product, because no published trial compares the two; the trials that exist test foot orthoses as a category and find custom devices no clearer winners than good prefabricated ones (see Sources).

The verdict

Upstep is a real company with a real product and a marketing layer that promises more than its terms deliver on turnaround and on refunds. Read the terms page before you order from anyone, including us, and hold us to the same standard: every number on this site is the same on every page and on your receipt, every competitor claim above links to its source with a date, and our policies page overrules any page that disagrees with it.

Verdict. Upstep is a real custom-orthotics company with a large catalog and a long track record, and its marketing promises more than its terms deliver on two points that matter: how long you wait and how much of your money comes back. Read the terms page before you order from anyone, including us.

FAQ

Common questions

Still unsure? Write to care@evensteporthotics.com — a person answers.

Is this Upstep review independent?

No, and we say so up front. EvenStep sells custom orthotics too. To keep it fair we quote only Upstep's own pages, give the URL and the date for every fact, and archive a copy of each page so the quotes can be checked.

How long does Upstep take to deliver?

Its How it Works page states one window, the FAQ on the same page states a shorter one, and the terms state a third measured from receipt of an impression box. None of those figures include carrier transit. We list all three with dates in the table above rather than picking one.

Does Upstep really offer a full refund?

Its product page advertises a money-back guarantee in plain terms. Its terms page lists deductions that grow at each stage, the largest applying after delivery, and states that shipping fees are not refunded. Both statements are quoted above so you can read them side by side.

Can Upstep bill my insurance?

Its own FAQ says it cannot make an insurance claim on a customer's behalf and cannot guarantee a plan will cover the purchase, while describing the orthotics as eligible for FSA and HSA funds. That is the same position EvenStep takes.

Why does EvenStep publish a review of a competitor?

Because people searching for Upstep reviews are deciding between the two of us, and the honest version of that comparison is on the record. Every fact here can be checked against the archived page, and we would rather be judged on the same standard.

Where can I see EvenStep's own terms?

Our guarantee, shipping and refund terms live on our policies pages, linked from every product page and from checkout. If any number on this site disagrees with those pages, the policies page wins and we fix the page.
